Know Your Gafta Contracts

This online seminar is split across two-days and is an ideal opportunity for trade professionals who want a practical overview of Gafta contracts and how to apply legal and commercial principles to everyday scenarios in the trade. It will be run by Gafta's General Counsel, Jonathan Waters. Jonathan is a barrister who has over 30 years' experience in advising on commercial contracts and disputes.

The seminar will include an overview of English contract law (on which all Gafta contracts are based), an analysis of the key Gafta contract terms as well as an in-depth consideration of a number of important topics such as counterparty risk, default and damages, commercial considerations, dispute resolution (including Gafta arbitration) and important 'do's and don't's' when contracting.

*The language of this seminar will be English*

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at trade professionals who:

  • Need to have an understanding of what to expect when dealing with Gafta contracts within their role
  • Are experienced in the trade but need practical and commercial and legal guidance on the key principles and features of Gafta contracts
  • Are interested in attending a Gafta training course in the future
  • Want to gain a better understanding of the key legal and commercial principles which underpin Gafta contracts and English contract law generally

This seminar runs online, or in-person if commissioned as an in-house course. Our expert speakers will present their PowerPoint slides via Zoom and will take questions from the audience at the end of each session via the zoom chat function. As the seminar requires a lot of attention from our students, we have broken this down into two 3-hour sessions across two days.

3 days before the course you will receive joining instructions. These will include:

  • A web link to click through and password to access the event online
  • A programme
  • A companion guide of how to ask questions and give real-time feedback via zoom
  • A link to all course material, such as relevant Gafta contracts
  • At the end of day 2 of the seminar there will be a short quiz to assess what you have learnt. This will be sent online and submitted to Gafta. After successfully passing this quiz, you will receive a certificate of attendance via email (within 2 weeks of completion)
