Do I need to memorise case law, the arbitration act, Gafta 125 or any other documents?
No. The Arbitrator Diploma is testing how you would assess cases as an arbitrator, as well as some general knowledge about the trade.
Do I need to be trained as a lawyer to take the exam?
No. Most Gafta Arbitrators are/were not lawyers.
How do I pass?
It is an analysis of your ability to understand scenarios and documents from the perspective of an arbitrator, taking a big picture view and applying both practical and legal knowledge. You will need to bring your trade knowledge into your answers, as well as your understanding of Gafta contracts, arbitration and any other pertinent issues.
No, this is a closed-book exam, meaning you are only permitted to view the documents provided on the day by Gafta.
If you fail the exam on your first try, you can schedule to re-take it. The re-take must be scheduled within 1 year of taking the first paper, otherwise the entitlement to a re-take is null.
Will this be the same exam paper?
No, the re-take paper will be a brand new set of questions.
What happens if I fail the retake?
Candidates who fail the re-take paper must wait 12 months before attempting the exam again.
Gafta training is valid for 5 years since the date of completion:
- GPD courses: Count 5 years from the final date of each course
- DLP Modules: Count 5 years from the final date of each module
You can take the exam in any city you choose, simply let Gafta know and we will find an invigilator for you. You cannot take the exam in your own home or office, it must be in a Gafta office or the office of another Gafta member.

After you pass the Arbitrator Diploma, provided you have an active Gafta membership, you will be listed in the Arbitrator Directory and be eligible to accept appointments.
Yes, every Gafta Arbitrator must commit to a minimum of 10 hours of CPD every year in order to be eligible for appointments.
